Quick answer: A drum sander is a woodworking machine that feeds a board on a conveyor belt under a spinning, abrasive-wrapped drum to sand it flat and to a precise thickness. Unlike a planer it doesn't tear out figured grain, and it will handle stock too thin or too short for a planer – but it removes only a few thousandths per pass, so it's a finishing and thicknessing machine, not a stock remover. Open-end models sand boards up to twice the drum width in two passes; closed models are stiffer and often have two drums. Run open-coat aluminum oxide rolls, light passes, and a clean feed belt.
How a drum sander works
One or two horizontal drums sit above a conveyor table. Each drum is wrapped in a spiral of abrasive cut from a drum sander roll and held at each end by a clip. The conveyor feed belt – itself an abrasive belt, so it grips – carries the board under the drum at a steady speed while pressure rollers hold it down. You set the drum height for the thickness you want, take a light pass, lower it a fraction, and repeat.
What a drum sander does well
- Flat, consistent surfaces on panels, tabletops and glued-up boards, with no snipe when set up right.
- Precise thickness on thin stock – veneer, guitar tops, box parts, strips under 1/4" – that a planer would destroy.
- Figured and reversing grain – curly maple, birdseye, burl – sanded rather than cut, so there's no tearout.
- Short pieces that can't safely go through a planer.
- End grain – cutting boards, for example.
- Finish sanding to 180–220 before assembly.
What it doesn't do
A drum sander is not a planer. It removes a few thousandths of an inch per pass, so trying to hog off 1/16" burns the wood, loads the paper, stalls the motor and glazes the drum. - Variable feed speed – slow for coarse grits and hard wood, faster for finishing.
- Feed-rate control that senses load and slows the conveyor before the motor stalls.
- Motor size – 1 to 1-3/4 HP for benchtop and 16–22" machines, 3–5 HP for 25" and up.
- A rigid, easily leveled conveyor table – the table being parallel to the drum is everything.
- Dust collection – a drum sander makes fine dust in huge quantities; a 4" port and a real collector are essential, not optional.
- Easy abrasive changes – spring-loaded clips make wrapping a new strip a two-minute job.

Buy drum sander rolls and cut your own wraps – it costs a fraction of pre-cut strips. Open-coat aluminum oxide is the right choice for nearly all woodworking: it resists loading on resinous wood and runs cool. Zirconia rolls last longer on hard, dense species.
