What makes a resin fiber disc different from other grinder abrasives?

The abrasive grain, resin bond, fiber backing, backing pad, and grinder all contribute to the cut. A fiber disc is replaceable coated abrasive media; the backing pad supplies the support it does not have by itself.

ALUMINUM OXIDE

Versatile general-metal option

Choose aluminum oxide for economical routine grinding, weld blending, deburring, and surface preparation. Maverick’s original page lists iron, aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and brass among its intended materials.

It is often the practical choice when moderate pressure, broad material coverage, and purchase price matter more than maximum productivity on a hard alloy.

CERAMIC

Designed for demanding, pressure-supported cutting

Ceramic grain is engineered to fracture under an appropriate load and expose fresh cutting edges. Maverick positions these variants for high-strength stainless, cobalt, superalloys, gates, risers, parting lines, and other demanding ferrous work.

The grinder and application must supply the right pressure and control; light contact or the wrong setup may not use the grain effectively.

No universal life multiplier is promised. Disc life and cut rate vary with alloy, pressure, contact angle, speed, pad density, heat, loading, and operator technique. The unsupported “3×” and “8×” statements from the old description are intentionally not repeated.

What does the backing pad change?

Use only a pad approved for the selected disc and grinder. Pad-manufacturer instructions control, but face density generally changes how firmly the abrasive engages the work.

HARDER PAD

Firmer support for coarse grinding

A firmer face is commonly used when a coarse grit needs strong, flatter contact for stock removal. It can feel less forgiving near edges and contours.

LIGHTER-DENSITY PAD

More compliance for finer grades

A more compliant face is commonly paired with finer grades and blending where some conformity is useful. It is not a substitute for the correct technique.

What is a resin fiber disc?

It is a coated abrasive disc with abrasive grain resin-bonded to a stiff fiber backing. Unlike a self-supporting bonded grinding wheel or an integral-backed flap disc, it must be mounted on a compatible backing pad and retainer.

What is the difference between aluminum oxide and ceramic resin fiber discs?

Aluminum oxide is the versatile, economical general-metal option on this page. Ceramic grain is designed for demanding, pressure-supported cutting on ferrous and high-strength alloys. Ceramic is not automatically the better choice for every metal, grinder, pressure level, or finish target.

Do resin fiber discs require a backing pad?

Yes. Resin fiber discs are used with a compatible backing pad and the grinder’s specified guard and flange system. Match the disc and pad diameter and follow all component speed ratings.

Which grit should I use for weld removal and blending?
